Raising Awareness of limb Loss
Limb loss affects so many people every day in Indianapolis. According to the latest census, approximately 1.25 million people in Indiapolis suffer from limb loss or disability. limb loss or disability is defined as functions that are severely hindered by the loss of limbs or parts of the body such as the cervical spine in the case of women or the upper limbs in men. There are several causes of limb loss or disability. HIV/AIDS is a prime cause of body waste management problems in HIV patients.
UNF is now recognizing limb loss and limb differences Awareness Month (LSAM) and, in celebration, the Indianaposlis Rehabilitation Hospital is celebrating its twenty-fiftyth anniversary of the first successful limb loss surgery done on a patient here. llam is being celebrated in April and was begun by the amputee coalition a decade ago. The primary goal of this month of April is to emphasize the significance of using prosthetic limbs, as well as to provide support to organizations working to improve the lives of those who are living with a handicap. Organizations helping those with disabilities should be considered in the limber concept as part of the "human gear" needed for the development of amputees.
The first organization working on the behalf of those with physical limitations is Artesia University, founded by Dr. B. S. Kumar. Artesia University is located in North Carolina. Its main mission is to train and educate artisans in the United States in drawing and painting. Since the beginning of the year, Artesia University has been working on a new project for the month of April, in collaboration with the Indianapolis AIDS Trust. Artesia will be highlighting the importance of gay and bisexual men in early screening for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, by distributing awareness brochures to all its members.
Another organization working hard on limb loss issues is American Special Medical Services, Inc. (ASMS). Many people don't realize that there are more than forty million Americans with some form of impairment of limb loss and multiple trauma. ASMS dedicates itself to raising the awareness of these people and their families, and providing services to them. ASMS also participates in research and educational activities.
A new organization for the month of April is called "Aggie's Place," which means a place for all those with limb loss and limb differences to come together and be happy. "Aggie's Place" will focus on the issue of vocational nursing, or caring for those who cannot care for themselves and need assistance with simple activities. Vocational nursing programs are being developed nationwide by Aggie's Place, and the program will serve thousands upon thousands of poor and disabled people. The group aims to raise funds to build twenty new vocational nursing homes. This is a huge project, and will help improve the lives of those who need help and want to move on into the future.
The National Association of Retail Sales and Marketing has scheduled an awareness campaign for April to coincide with the second annual World AIDS Day. The NARML will feature a booth at the Gay and Lesbian International AIDS conference in Washington, D.C. on April 12th, to promote awareness and information about AIDS among the general public. Across the country, other organizations such as the National League for Substance Abuse and the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence are celebrating the twenty-fifty year anniversary of the first worldwide conference on AIDS. Many organizations have also included a donation in their fundraising efforts to help continue the fight against AIDS.
Your local High School Activities and Athletic Club can help you raise awareness of the issues regarding drug and alcohol use. Contact your school's athletic department to see if you can join the league, or make a donation in support of the campaign. Your club's loose energies will help distribute information to others in your area about the problems that exist in a society that so desperately needs to be educated. Even if you live in a small town, there are chances that other parents are not aware of the things that their children are facing. By joining the league, you can speak to other parents, and get their assistance in hopes that you can help them spread information on how to speak up for their children when it comes to issues such as drug and alcohol use.

With the support of friends and family, and the promotion of a strong limb loss prevention campaign by local schools and other organizations, you can give hope to those who are currently fighting the fight against this disease. While it takes courage to announce your disability, and to set up a fundraiser, you can have an impact on the lives of others by becoming involved in this cause. If you know someone who is fighting the battle, offer your assistance in whatever way you can; even donating cash so they can purchase items that promote this cause. When you raise awareness, you help save limbs.
